Frequently Asked Questions

We’re sure you have many questions and hopefully we’ve answered most of them on this page, but if you need further information, send us a quick email, or call us at 916-777-8000. We look forward to speaking with you!

When should Catalyst become involved in the project?2022-11-08T18:34:41+00:00

We believe that a project’s success is based significantly on the amount of time spent in planning and preconstruction. Our recommendation is that you have us involved at the same time as the design professional to properly understand your project desires and conduct any necessary preconstruction inspections. This process also allows clear communication on maintaining strict attention to time and budget as the design develops.

Are you licensed, insured, and bonded?2022-11-08T18:34:25+00:00

Yes, our contractor state license number is 1071416. We carry all necessary bonding in compliance with California state law. We have an extensive GL insurance policy as well as commercial insurance on all our vehicles and equipment. You can verify our license and information at the CSLB website here.

What types of projects do you specialize in?2022-11-08T18:34:13+00:00

Our primary focus is on extensive renovation projects such as kitchens, bathrooms, additions, and whole homes. We have also recently expanded our focus to ground up ADU’s (mother in-law suites) as well. Whether the project is big or small, if the desire for a specific level of detail and quality craftsmanship is there, we would love to be of help.

What areas do you work in?2022-12-27T22:56:18+00:00

We are based out of the Sacramento area and perform our work in the following cities: Rocklin, Roseville, Loomis, Granite Bay, El Dorado Hills, Sacramento, and surrounding areas.

Is my project too small for you?2022-11-08T18:33:49+00:00

While we are a full turnkey construction company, we don’t consider any project too small. One of the greatest benefits of smaller projects is the ability to complete the preconstruction process and execute the project in a timelier manner than most large projects. Our quality will never be sacrificed to achieve this and you will get the same level of detail as you would in any large renovation.

What will it cost?2022-12-15T00:50:38+00:00

The cost of any project is directly dependent on the scope of work and the level of finish involved. There are many variables that will need to be determined to develop the final cost, that is why it is important to have a good team behind you to develop your budget and make sure an accurate cost analysis is properly performed. If you are currently in the conceptual stage and are looking to gain an understanding of the cost to complete certain projects, we recommend finding articles that directly encompass your region. We have found that online searches for the cost of a renovation project is not properly reflective to that of businesses located in the Northwest region. A good cost report for the San Diego region is produced annually by Remodeling Magazine and can be found here: With our design/build approach we provide a preliminary estimate based on your project goals. As the design develops, we provide feedback to make sure the design will stay within your budgetary constraints. This allows you to have confidence in the project and process as it develops, well before final drawings and our proposal is produced. One of the easiest ways to implode a budget is to not properly value engineer a project with your design-build team. We have an article related to proper budgeting techniques for your project you can find here.

What is design/build?2022-11-08T18:33:26+00:00

Many residential construction companies perform work with clients utilizing an approach known as design-bid-build. This is where the client works separately with their designer or architect to complete their design and then begins requesting bids from builders or contractors to construct the design. The problem with this approach is that there can be unforeseen elements that occur during the bid process (such as exceeding the budget due to overdesign, unknown costs, or unattainable schedules). If this occurs, the entire process needs to move back to the design phase, delaying the project and extending the preconstruction process. In a design/build approach, the architect, designer, and builder work together throughout the design, providing accurate pricing throughout the design, and value engineering any necessary parts to make sure they align with your budget and timeline. Do you work with designers and/or architects?2022-11-08T18:33:13+00:00

Yes! If you already have an existing design professional, we would love the opportunity to work with them. Our main goal is to develop your project to meet your needs, and within your constraints. At Catalyst Construction we work with design professionals who have the same goals in mind and see the value in the design/build approach.

What is value engineering?2022-11-08T18:33:00+00:00

When most people hear the term value engineering, they think this means substituting a lesser quality product to achieve the same outcome, but at a lower cost. This is a common misconception. Value engineering is a process in which the builder analyzes the function of certain items or elements and its associated cost. By weighing this cost/benefit ratio, the building team can make recommendations for alternative building methods or products to improve the value and decrease the cost of your project.

Do I get three bids?2022-11-08T18:32:44+00:00

At Catalyst Construction we don’t do competitive bidding. One of our main company values is the relationship we build with our client and the transparency we offer throughout the process. We believe that a competitive bidding atmosphere leads builders to be vague or incomplete in their bidding process, therein having a lower initial cost to be awarded the project. Our goal is to develop your project with you, within your budget, and to a higher level of quality and accuracy than competitive bidding allows. While we would more than likely desire the opportunity to be awarded your project, we find it vital that you find a company that properly aligns with your job specific goals and constraints.

Where do I start?2022-12-27T22:57:14+00:00

This survey will give us a better understanding of your project needs and will help us make the most of our time during the initial call.

When would an engineer be necessary?2022-11-08T18:32:00+00:00

The need for an engineer will be confirmed early in the process. While some projects may not require any engineering calculations, such as kitchen and bathroom renovations, other extensive projects may. Whenever walls are being relocated, removed, or buildings are being expanded upon, a certain level of structural engineering will most likely be required.

Do I need a building permit?2022-11-08T18:31:43+00:00

Most projects that require the relocation of walls, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, or roofing will require a building permit. While this process can be daunting, Catalyst Construction will work with your design professional to acquire the proper permitting.

I’m worried about the return on such a large investment.2022-12-15T00:50:03+00:00

We understand that a renovation involves not only a significant amount of money, but trust as well. This is one of the reasons we dedicate so much of our time to the preconstruction process. We want you to feel that your goals have been properly communicated and to make sure we understand your desired outcome. It is imperative that you have an accurate cost estimate of the project early on and understand the return on your investment. Below is a report produced annually by Remodeling Magazine on Cost vs Value quantifying the cost recouped per project:

Do I need to relocate while work is being done?2022-11-08T18:31:07+00:00

This will depend entirely on the project scope and the affected area of your home. While our hope is to allow you to feel unrestricted during construction, there may be sections of the project schedule that will require certain utilities to be turned off or disconnected. We will clearly communicate this with you before construction begins and develop a plan of action to make this process as fluid and comfortable as possible. This may be anything from setting up a temporary kitchen for your family to arranging dates for a vacation.

What about my family and animals?2022-11-08T18:30:54+00:00

We are very conscientious of the fact that your home will most likely have paws and little feet running around. All work areas will be coned off, as well as interior walls zip taped to avoid contaminating any living spaces. When children need to enter the worksite, it is crucial that they are accompanied by an adult or supervisor. Animals will need to be confined away from the work areas as well. We are happy to work with you in whatever means necessary to keep your children and pets safe.

Will my project remain on schedule?2022-11-08T18:30:40+00:00

We begin developing the schedule during our pre-construction planning. We systematically order any long-lead time products, coordinate proper timeliness with any trade partners involved, and set material selection deadlines. This early development allows us to implement a construction schedule that is both efficient and accurate. The schedule is a working document that may require revision throughout the life of the project. We do our due diligence to develop a schedule that can be maintained unless any unforeseen issues arise. If these issues do arise, you will be informed immediately and an updated schedule will be presented, along with a detailed description explaining the need for schedule revision.

What should my expectations be for the crew?2022-11-08T18:30:26+00:00

Our desire as a company is to build long lasting relationships with not only our clients, but with our employees and trade partners as well. We have built an atmosphere of mutual respect within our company and our partners. Your project manager will be your contact lead throughout the life of the project, tracking materials and job progress, as well as keeping track of the day-to-day activities. Your jobsite will be left in an organized manner at the end of every day as a small visual understanding of our mutually shared respect for our trade and your property.

What are change orders?2022-11-08T18:30:06+00:00

With a fixed price contract, a change order will only occur when there has been a development in the project scope of work, or unknown conditions were discovered that demand repair. Most change orders require additional work at an extra cost. If these issues arise, we will address them immediately with you before proceeding. We will submit a change order to you detailing the cost for the required work, as well as any changes to the schedule this may produce.

How does the payment schedule work?2022-11-08T18:29:49+00:00

We will outline a payment schedule in our proposal submittal. This will include the payment amount and at what point in the project schedule that payment will be due. You will only be billed for completed work.

What happens if there is a warranty issue? Who do I call?2022-11-08T18:29:26+00:00

We want you to have confidence in your decision to work with us. A significant part of that is knowing we can be there, if necessary, once the job is complete. If any issues arise, please contact our office immediately. We stand behind our work and craftsmanship and will schedule an appointment to assess any concerns. Even if your questions are not regarding any warranty issues, we want you to feel free to call us. We would be happy to assist you or answer any questions you may have.
